research and theory
Our project is framed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Number 4 Education, Number 5 Gender Equity and Number 6 Clean Water and Sanitation. The goals ‘recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education (and) reduce inequality’. (https://sdgs.un.org/goals) Current research undertaken by WHO, World Bank and WaterAid reinforce and back up our fieldwork. The practical aim of running water project is to provide functional water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities in schools that consists of sanitation infrastructure, hygiene infrastructure, adequate water and effective waste management. (World Bank) Specifically the research suggests a toilet ratio for female teachers and student should be 1 toilet to 25 females. The male teacher and student ratio is 1 toilet and 1 urinal for every 50 males. (World Bank) And the male and female blocks of toilets should be separated. (WHO)
